What is MAP?

MAP aims through a partnership between statutory, voluntary and private agencies, and community organisations to assist local residents to identify needs and issues and develop strategies to address these with the purpose of improving the quality of life in the Mearns.

Who are MAP?

Council Officers from Community Learning and from Social Work, Community Councillors, Mearns Youth Forum, MCHLN, Villages in Control and individuals who live and work in the area. One local elected member sits on the committee. AVA and NHS Grampian are also involved on an as and when required basis.

MAP has carried out a wide variety of projects in the Mearns area. These include:

  • Establishing Laurencekirk Out of School Club
  • Establishing Mearns Healthy Living Network
  • Setting up and running the community minibus (now on second bus—have just received funding for another 3 years)
  • Carrying out a "Community Planning Project" which looked at methods of engaging with the community.
  • Facilitating a review of "Villages in Control"
  • Administering the Tullo/Twinshiels Windfarm Community Benefit Fund which distributes around £90K annually to communities in the Mearns Area.
  • Setting up Mearns Cycle Hub, (formerly Benholm Bikes) and providing training for volunteers to run the project.
  • Been the subject of a paper written by Dr Karen McArdle of Aberdeen University titled “Researching Success”
